5G CPE Antenna Configuration for B2B Deployments: 2×2 MIMO vs 4×4 MIMO vs External Antenna — A 2026 Selection Guide for ISP and Enterprise Projects

When specifying antennas for a 5G CPE project, compare the exact device variant, supported bands, antenna connections and intended installation. Antenna count alone does not predict the speed a customer will receive. Evaluate the device on the target network and at representative installation locations before committing to a deployment.

Confirm the configuration for the selected bands

Ask for the supported antenna configuration by band and operating mode. Check whether the specification describes transmit and receive paths, available spatial streams or simply the number of physical antennas. Do not assume that every supported band uses the same MIMO configuration.

Internal or external antennas

For an indoor unit, review placement, available signal and the device’s antenna arrangement. If external antennas are being considered, confirm that the selected variant supports the required connection, antenna type and installation. Cable routing, connector fit and installation constraints should be part of the sample review.

Compare an indoor CPE with an outdoor installation

An outdoor receiving unit and an indoor router are a different installation architecture from a desktop indoor CPE. Compare mounting, cable runs, power supply and indoor coverage as a complete system. Outdoor placement is a project choice that should be assessed on site, rather than a promise of a fixed speed improvement.

Record useful sample-test results

Use the same target SIM, network and test conditions when comparing candidates. Record the device model and firmware, installation location, signal readings, download and upload results, and service interruptions. Include more than one time of day and representative load conditions in the acceptance plan.

Procurement checklist

  • Target country, operator and required bands.
  • Exact model and firmware variant.
  • Antenna configuration by band and any external connections.
  • Indoor placement or outdoor mounting requirements.
  • Documented sample acceptance criteria.
