Fixed wireless operators in Southeast Asia and Africa are turning to outdoor CPE + WiFi 6 kits to solve a persistent problem: strong 5G outdoors, weak 5G indoors. As mid-band spectrum such as n77/n78 becomes the workhorse of 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), its limited building penetration is driving a shift in how operators position customer-premises equipment — and, in the process, changing the economics of base-station deployment.
Indoor signal weakness pushes operators outdoors
Dense concrete construction, metal roofing and high temperatures across much of Southeast Asia and Africa mean that a signal reading “excellent” at the street can drop to a single bar inside a home. The resulting support load and churn pressure have pushed operators toward an architectural fix: move the radio outdoors.
An outdoor unit (ODU) mounted on the wall or roof captures the strongest available signal with high-gain 4×4 MIMO antennas, then hands the connection to an indoor WiFi 6 router over a single PoE Ethernet cable. The indoor unit distributes high-throughput WiFi 6 across the home while the outdoor unit does the heavy lifting on cellular reception.
Fewer base stations, lower capital cost
The most consequential effect of this shift is on the coverage equation. Because a 4×4 MIMO outdoor unit holds a usable link far deeper into the cell edge than an indoor unit can, every home an outdoor CPE serves is a home that does not require another macro site. At carrier volume, an outdoor CPE costs a fraction of a base station, which can run into six or seven figures once spectrum, tower steel, power, backhaul and civil works are counted. The result is fewer towers, more subscribers per site and materially lower capital cost per connected home — an advantage that matters most in low-ARPU markets.
Carrier-grade requirements for scale
Deploying this architecture at scale demands rugged IP65 enclosures rated for a wide temperature range, backup power so voice and alarm links survive outages, and TR-069/TR-181 remote management with remote firmware updates and watch-dog self-recovery. These capabilities separate a deployable fixed wireless network from a consumer-grade box, and are now standard expectations among operators evaluating outdoor CPE kits.
As 5G FWA expands across emerging markets, the outdoor CPE is emerging as one of the most cost-effective tools an operator has for extending coverage into weak-signal homes — and for doing more with the base stations it already owns.
Honlly Telecom manufactures carrier-grade 4G/5G outdoor CPE and WiFi 6 router kits for fixed wireless access, serving operators, ISPs, MVNOs and distributors across 75+ countries with OEM/ODM customization.
